We had an awesome time this summer working with students from Channelview High School searching for environmental bacteria capable of degrading pollutants like plastics and rubber. We spent six weekends going out to different locations near Buffalo Bayou and the Houston ship channel to collect samples and then took the students back to the lab to help screen and characterize the bacteria. We managed to collect nearly 400 strains and isolated several that were able to degrade latex!
